Mercedes Benz Automatic Transmissions Manufactured 1961-1983

  • Model Numbers: 722.0 722.1 722.2
  • 3 and 4-speed longitudinal automatic transmissions
  • Identification: can be recognized by its four bolt pan

The Mercedes-Benz first series of automatic transmission, designated with series model numbers 722.0, 722.1 and 722.2, is a family of three and four-speed automatic transmission for engines with longitudinal layout for rear wheel drive passenger cars.

This transmission was the first Mercedes-Benz true automatic transmission developed in house.

Before this, the company used semi automatics systems like a vacuum-power shifting for overdrive or the "Hydrak" hydraulic automatic clutch system. Alternatively, they bought true automatic transmissions from other vendors, such BorgWarner.

Control of the fully automatic system is fully hydraulic and it uses electrical wire only for the kickdown solenoid valve and the neutral safety switch.

Three-speed units use two planetary gear sets and 4-speed units use three planetary gear sets.

722.2 (K4C025 and K4A040)

The 722.2 is the first of the series, launched in April 1961 for the W111 220SEB, later replaced with the 722.0 and 722.1. It is a 4-speed unit and uses fluid coupling (also referred in some manuals as hydraulic/automatic clutch).

722.0 (W3A040 and W3B050)

The 722.0 is the strongest of the series, starting with the W3A040, W3B050 and a reinforced W3B050 (722.003) exclusively used in the W116 450 SEL 6.9. The second in the series, it was released initially for the W116 450SE and SEL in August 1972, and it uses a torque converter instead of fluid coupling. The transmission is used in V8 engines as a 3-speed unit.

722.1 (W4B025)

The 722.1 is a 4-speed unit, the last model released in the series, that also uses a torque converter. Used with l4, l5 and l6 engines, it was not used in V8 models because it wasn't designed to handle that amount of torque, instead the 722.0 was used in those V8 engine applications. In normal situations, this model transmission rests stationary in 2nd gear, but uses 1st gear when the vehicle starts moving and throttle is applied, or if L position is selected with the gear selector.

Mercedes Benz 722 .0 1 .2 Automatic Transmission Manuals (16)

As an automotive enthusiast with a specific focus on transmission systems, especially those from Mercedes-Benz, I can confidently discuss the intricate details of the Mercedes Benz automatic transmissions manufactured between 1961 and 1983, particularly the 722.0, 722.1, and 722.2 models.

Firstly, Mercedes-Benz's journey with automatic transmissions is rich and evolved over time. The 722.0, 722.1, and 722.2 series signify a significant milestone for Mercedes-Benz, as they were the company's first true automatic transmissions developed in-house. Prior to these, Mercedes-Benz relied on semi-automatic systems such as vacuum-power shifting for overdrive and the "Hydrak" hydraulic automatic clutch system. Additionally, they sourced automatic transmissions from other manufacturers like BorgWarner.

Key Points:

  1. Identification: One can recognize these transmissions by their distinct four-bolt pan.

  2. Transmission Types:

    • 722.2: Launched in April 1961 for the W111 220SEB, it is a 4-speed unit that uses fluid coupling (also known as hydraulic/automatic clutch).
    • 722.0: Initially used in the W116 450SE and SEL in August 1972, this is the most robust among the series and operates using a torque converter.
    • 722.1: The last model in this series, it's a 4-speed unit that, like the 722.0, also uses a torque converter. However, it's designed for l4, l5, and l6 engines and not V8 models.
  3. Technical Details:

    • Control for these transmissions is predominantly hydraulic, with electrical wiring only for specific functions like the kickdown solenoid valve and the neutral safety switch.
    • The 3-speed units typically employ two planetary gear sets, while the 4-speed units use three planetary gear sets.
  4. Applications and Variants:

    • The 722.2 had various applications in vehicles like the W114, W115, and more.
    • The 722.0, due to its robust nature, found its place in high-torque V8 models, especially the W116 450 SEL 6.9.
    • The 722.1, though a 4-speed unit, was not designed for V8 models, with the 722.0 being the choice for such applications.
  5. Manuals and Resources:

    • For those looking to delve deeper into maintenance, repair, or understanding these transmissions, there are specific manuals available. These manuals provide comprehensive insights, from functional descriptions to repair procedures, aiding technicians and enthusiasts alike.
  6. Transmission Parts: Over the years, various parts specific to each transmission model have been developed, ensuring that enthusiasts and mechanics have access to genuine components for maintenance and repair.

  7. Historical Context: Understanding these transmissions also provides a glimpse into the evolution of Mercedes-Benz's engineering prowess, transitioning from semi-automatic systems to fully automatic transmissions developed in-house.

In conclusion, the 722.0, 722.1, and 722.2 series of Mercedes-Benz automatic transmissions represent a crucial phase in the company's engineering evolution. These transmissions combine hydraulic control with specific electrical functionalities, catering to a range of vehicles from sedans to high-torque V8 models. The availability of comprehensive manuals and dedicated parts ensures that these transmissions continue to be serviced and revered by enthusiasts and professionals globally.
