Freddie Prinze Jr. provides an encouraging update regarding his return in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, saying both sides are "motivated." The actor starred in the original 1997 slasher film as one of the four young friends stalked by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident in which they believed to have killed a man. Now, another I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel is moving forward with several new stars and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge) serving as director and co-writer.
In an interview with Us Weekly, Prinze provided an encouraging update regarding his return in the I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel, saying that both sides are "motivated," and are "trying to make it work." The actor expresses optimism regarding the ongoing negotiations, though the details need to be finalized, schedules need to align, and everyone has to be satisfied with the script. Nothing’s a lock until there’s ink on paper, until the contract’s signed, but I’m definitely talking to them. And if we can make everything work — and I know they wanna make everything work, I know I wanna make everything work — then we’ll try and make it work. But we gotta make sure everyone’s schedules fit.
Everybody has to be happy with the script. I know Jen Robinson, the director [of the reboot], and I like Jen Robinson very much as a director and as a person. I think people like her are the future of this business. So there’s a lot of good things that make me want to do the movie.
I’m motivated, I know they’re motivated. I know both sides are trying to make it work. And hopefully we do.
The sequel is set for release on July 18, 2025.
Who Else Stars In The I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel?
Another Original Star Is In Talks To Return
It was previously reported that, along with Prinze, original star Jennifer Love Hewitt is also in talks to reprise her role in the upcoming legacy sequel. The two starred as Julie James and Ray Bronson in the original 1997 slasher and, after surviving, they returned for the 1998 sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. In 2006, a direct-to-video sequel, I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, was released without any of the original cast, followed by Prime Video's I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series, which was canceled after one season.

Why Amazon Canceled I Know What You Did Last Summer After One Season
The I Know What You Did Last Summer TV series adaptation has been canceled by Amazon Prime Video after only one season, and here's why.
While Hewitt and Prinze are still in talks to return, the sequel has already found multiple new stars. Riverdale's Camila Mendes, Outer Banks star Madelyn Cline, The Little Mermaid's Jonah Hauer-King, Tony Award nominee Sarah Pidgeon, and Atlanta's Tyriq Withers have all officially been cast, though nothing is known about the characters they will be playing. Mendes and Cline have already established themselves as stars in teen drama series, so they should be able to smoothly transition into the teen slasher sequel. Mendes also worked before with the director, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, on Do Revenge.
The original 1997 slasher was penned by Kevin Williamson, the creator of Scream, and the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel seems to be taking inspiration from 2022's Scream cast by blending a mix of fresh talent and returning original cast members. The sequel has already found its new young stars – Mendes, Cline, and Hauer-King – though it still needs its original cast members, Hewitt and Prinze, to help it feel connected to the original movie.
