Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipe - A Quaint Life (1)

Years ago I stumbled across this little gem. I had been having dry skin issues on different parts of my body, especially on the feet. I would apply lotion liberally throughout the day but the lotion never seemed to get through the top dry surface.

This is where exfoliation comes in handy. I searched for something that didn’t contain a whole bunch of chemicals or things I couldn’t pronounce. Applying something like this to my skin seemed strange to me. So with trial and failure, I found the sugar scrub. Not only is it simple to make, it likely calls for ingredients you already have on hand.

Why Use an Exfoliate?

It is no secret that our skin is constantly growing and just as often shedding old. This old skin does not always just come right off. Somethings it builds a layer of dry skin that is ashy in appearance and can become cracked when thick enough. Using a good quality exfoliate will help restore the skin to a soft, smooth appearance. Allowing your very best skin to show. This homemade sugar scrub is an excellent exfoliate that you can make in seconds and does the trick wonderfully.

Ingredients

Olive Oil- is an amazing oil for not just cooking but also for using on the skin in your natural skincare recipes. The olive oil in this sugar scrub helps leave your skin feeling silky soft and moisturized right after use. Olive oil acts as an antioxidant, a substance that prevents oxidation.

A process that can produce cell-damaging chemicals known as free radicals. In addition, olive oil contain fat-soluble vitamins A, E, D, and K. Vitamin E is particularly powerful in the use of skincare. Overall, giving added benefits to this sugar scrub exfoliates.

Brown Sugar- Brown sugar is the perfect granule for this homemade sugar scrub. Particularly if using raw brown sugar as the granules are intact and have not been treated. However, the use of brown sugar in this recipe is due to the fact that brown sugar is known to be slightly less abrasive than white sugar. Making it ideal for use on sensitive skin or even facial skin.

FAQ

How to use this Homemade Sugar Scrub?

This scrub is great to use just about anywhere on the body that you are having dry skin issues or want to just do a great exfoliation on. If using it on the feet, I like to simply soak my feet in the bathtub while sitting on the edge for about 10 minutes or so. Then use the scrub and rinse. After I apply a good amount of my Whipped Body Butter or use a Beeswax Lotion Bar for moisturizing.

If using on the body, I place the jar of scrub on the hamper next to my shower. I get into the shower and wet my skin. Then apply a small amount of the sugar scrub to the area and begin lightly massaging it in circles. You don’t need to press down hard or apply much pressure to this scrub as the granules from the sugar will work to get the dead skin off. By simply massaging it into the area for a few seconds and rinsing it under the warm water in the shower. Your skin will feel silky and soft.

Where can I use this Homemade Sugar Scrub?

This scrub can be used anywhere you have dry skin or are wanting a bit of exfoliation. I love using this scrub on my hands for hand treatments when coming in from the garden. But it also works well on the body and feet for at-home pedicures.

I wouldn’t recommend using this on your décolletage as that area has thinner skin and this scrub might be a bit too abrasive for it. I have used this on my face and neck for an at-home deep cleanse facial and you can see more on that in this post with a video in My Natural Skincare Routine.

How often can I use it?

I suggest using once a week if applying to the same area but no more than that. Especially if used on the face or other sensitive areas. You can use it up to 2-3 times a week on rough extra dry skin areas of the body such as feet, elbows, hands, or knees.

How to Store

Store in an air-tight container such as a mason jar with a lid or even a Tupperware will work. Keep in a cool dry place. This recipe will keep for up to 3 months. Please note that oil might rise to the top of the sugar. If this happens, simply take a spoon and stir to mix it up before using.
